I just came across this posting today, and it reminded me of a book I had stumbled across not too long ago: "Samurai Women 1184-1877", by Osprey Publishing. Osprey is a publisher which specializes in books about military history. I was surprised and intrigued to find that there was enough material for Osprey to produce an entire book on this particular topic. It's a short book, but that's typical for Osprey books. Like most Osprey books, it's probably rather technical in places, but you still might find it interesting.

I've read a couple of books about her and she has always seemed to be very respected in Japanese history, both throughout it and in modern times. A great read.

Actually, as surprising as it may seem, it looks like women in Japan (as well as China and possibly other Asian countries) were much more equal to men back then than they are now... One of the best examples is the prohibition of female reigns in 1889.
